Boom arm

A boom arm is an articulating microphone stand, usually spring-loaded, that clamps to the edge of a desk and lets a mic swing into position from above or the side rather than sitting on a small desktop tripod. This keeps the mic close and consistently positioned without a stand base taking up desk space or picking up vibration from typing.

Because the mic can be swung out of the way when not recording and pulled back into the same spot each time, a boom arm helps maintain consistent mic distance session to session, which matters for keeping gain settings and proximity effect predictable. Many arms also route the XLR or USB cable internally, tidying up desk cable clutter.

When choosing a boom arm, weight capacity and reach matter more than looks, since an arm rated for a lighter mic than it is holding will droop over time, and a short arm may not reach comfortably in a wider desk setup. A sturdy clamp and a good spring mechanism make the difference between an arm that holds position and one that sags after a few weeks.
