Audio interface
A box that converts analog signal from XLR microphones into digital audio a computer can record.
An audio interface sits between XLR microphones and a computer, supplying phantom power to condensers, amplifying the incoming signal with its preamps, and converting the analog waveform into digital audio at a chosen sample rate and bit depth. Most also provide a headphone output with its own volume control for monitoring while recording.
The number of input channels an interface offers determines how many microphones can record at once without mixing them down first, which matters for two-person and panel podcasts. Preamp quality, measured loosely by how much clean gain is available before noise becomes audible, is the single biggest factor in how good a dynamic microphone will sound.
Latency, the small delay between speaking and hearing yourself in headphones, is handled by direct hardware monitoring on most interfaces, which routes the input signal to the headphone jack before it ever reaches the computer. When comparing interfaces, check channel count against how many hosts or guests will be in the room, not just the price, since an interface with too few inputs becomes a bottleneck the moment a show adds a second voice.
