Condenser microphone
A sensitive mic that captures fine detail and room tone, and needs phantom power when wired over XLR.
A condenser microphone uses a pair of electrically charged plates that move relative to each other as sound waves hit them. That design responds faster and more accurately to subtle changes in a sound wave than the coil in a dynamic mic, which is why condensers are prized for their detail and airy top end.
That same sensitivity is a double-edged sword for podcasting. A condenser will also pick up the air conditioner, the keyboard clatter, traffic outside, and any echo bouncing off hard walls. Condensers work best in a room with some acoustic treatment, or at least soft furnishings, carpet and curtains to cut reflections.
An XLR condenser needs 48V phantom power from an interface or mixer to operate, while a USB condenser has that circuitry built in. When shopping, look at the stated sensitivity and self-noise figures rather than the price alone, and remember that a condenser in an untreated room will often sound worse than a dynamic mic in the same space. Testing a condenser in the actual room it will be used in, not just a quiet showroom, is the only reliable way to know if the space is ready for one.
