Best Studio Rack Mounts

Three numbers decide a rack purchase and only one of them is on the front of the box. Rack units come first: 1U is 1.75 inches of front panel height and the 19 inch width is fixed, so a 10U stand gives you 17.5 inches of stacked space and a 1U or 2U shelf gives you a place to park gear that has no rack ears at all. Depth is the number people get wrong, because a cantilever shelf quoted at 10 inches deep will not hold a preamp with a 13 inch chassis, and a rear-heavy box on a short shelf levers the front rails. Available depths in practice run from about 10 to 18 inches fixed, with sliding trays adjustable across roughly 20 to 30 inches for a deep cabinet, and the sliding versions are the ones worth paying for if you patch from the back. Load rating is the third: 44 pounds is common for a 1U cantilever and 50 pounds for 2U, which is enough for an interface and a headphone amp but not for a heavy linear power supply or a UPS, and cantilever ratings assume the weight sits over the front rails rather than out at the tip. Vented trays are the default because anything with a transformer wants airflow, and lips are a small feature that stops gear walking off during a load-out. Steel takes screws better than folded aluminum and stays flat under weight.
